Professional Reviews For This Wine

Bordeaux Book(1998) | Rating: 96

A totally compelling Climens and every bit as good as the 1988. It is probably the best Climens made since their spectacular 1971. Still light gold in color, it has an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, there is great richness that seems all the more impressive because of the wine's remarkable clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light. The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best.

Gorgeous, ripe, and rich, oozing with tropical, honey and mineral flavors that take off like a heat-seeking missile on the finish. Tempting now.

Big and creamy and luscious. Together and surely at its peak. Attractive vivacity. Bit chewy on the finish – maybe it will dry out a little?

Orange extract/faded gold and very clear. Orange zest, creme brulee, caramel, coffee cake, and vanilla on the nose. The palate of this wine blew me away - all of the taught structure of a dessert wine without any of the usual heft. A syrupy cloud moving slowly across the tongue.

About This Producer

Chateau Climens is a case study in meticulous tradition (only five families have owned the estate since its origins). Owned by the Roborel family from the 15th century through the late 20th century, this Barsac chateau (known as the "Lord of Barsac") produces some of the best sweet wines in the world. Ironically, its name translates to "unfertile" or "poor land" - quite the paradox for this Premier Cru vineyard! Changes in winemaking at Climens occurred only when new methods proved themselves effective in improving the quality of the wine. The estate was taken over by the Lurton family (who own almost a dozen chateaux in Bordeaux) in 1971, with the cellar master, Christian Broustat, remaining the same. Another example of Climens's seamless tradition is Broustat's background as a third generation winemaker. Climens's 100% Semillon vineyard is known for producing wines with a fruity bouquet (pear and apricot), fine levels of acidity, finesse, and balance. After the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented, the wines are aged in oak for 18 to 24 months. Climens is typically one of the first wineries to harvest as botrytis strikes here early in the season. With proper care and storage, these wines can age for 50 to 100 years. The estate's second wine is known as Cypres de Climens.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
