Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

Amazingly elegant and complex featuring rich cedar, currant, black cherry and cassis notes, with grace, harmony and the kind of structure that should ensure it will age beautifully until the turn of the century. The aftertaste echoes cherry flavors.

Forgetting, of course, the 1988, 1989, and 1990 trilogy, the 1986 has turned out to be one of the best wines made from this once perennial underachiever. Deep black/ruby in color, with a fragrant, expansive bouquet of oak and blackcurrants, this brawny, full-bodied, rich wine has plenty of tannin yet, atypically for the vintage, a pleasing suppleness that will permit it to be drunk in the early nineties.

About This Producer

Chateau Pichon Baron is a Second Growth classified Bordeaux estate located in the Pauillac appellation. In addition to producing a grand vin, Pichon Baron makes a second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville.

The two estates Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande were originally joined as one property in the 18th century, but its vineyards were divided among the Longueville heirs in 1850. In 1987 the French insurance company AXA purchased Pichon Baron and installed Jean-Michel Cazes as its director. More recently, Christian Seely took over the management role as of 2000. The property has seen much improvement over the last 20 years.

The 73 hectares of gravel vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Aging is done in French oak barrels for up to 18 months. Pichon Baron has a structured style that can be attributed to the large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend. Some of the best recent vintages include 2000, 2003 and 2005.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
