Professional Reviews For This Wine

Burgundy Book(1990) | Rating: 94

The spectacular Richebourg has a stunning nose, is more full bodied and powerful than usual, very long, but also quite tannic. I tasted it twice and my estimate on peak drinkability was between 1996 and 2012. It should be a real ager. This is among the few superstars of this vintage, but the 1986 is not for drinking soon-patience is most definitely required.

Very firm and deeply concentrated, but wrapped in enough tannin to need at least until 1995 to begin emerging from its shell. Already has great finessse and structure, echoing ripe cherry and sweet spices on the long but tannic finish.

About This Producer

Domaine de la Romanee Conti (DRC) is Burgundy's most famous estate, producing all grand cru wines from 25 hectares of vines. The wines are made in extremely limited quantities and generate some of the highest prices on the market. DRC produces the grand crus Romanee Conti, La Tache, Richebourg, Romanee Saint Vivant, Grands Echezeaux, Echezeaux and Montrachet, of which both Romanee Conti and La Tache are monopoles.

Aubert de Villiane has farmed the vineyards organically since 1986 and adhered to traditional, natural winemaking practices. Only natural yeasts are used and aging is done in 100% new oak. The wines are characterized by finesse, balance and refinement. They directly reflect their sense of place and have the ability to age while increasing in both character and value.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
