Champagne's greatest rarity is made of grapes from ungrafted pre-phylloxera stocks in Aÿ and Bouzy. No other Champagne can display such richness. The '86 may not be one of the greatest vintages, but here too there is an intractable power that lifts it over its competitors. The color is always dark, with elements of mahogany and the nose is astonishingly broad, with layers of fruit and vegetable aromas. The wine is compact, with a strict finish.
