About This Producer


The House of Croft was founded over three hundred years ago. The earliest evidence of the firm's activity as a Port shipper dates from 1678, coincidentally the year of the first ever recorded shipments of Port wine. The company was originally known as Phayre & Bradley after its founding partners and took its present name in 1736 when it was joined by John Croft, a member of an old and distinguished family of Yorkshire wine merchants. The Croft family played a prominent and influential role in the Port wine trade and elevated the House of Croft to the place of distinction which it occupies to this day. In 1911 the House of Croft was acquired by the Gilbeys, the distinguished English wine trade family. It is now owned and run by descendants of two old Port wine families, the Yeatmans and Fladgates. The place of distinction occupied by Croft and its wines is due in no small measure to its ownership of one of the finest estates of the Douro Valley, the famous Quinta da Roeda.

Wine Varietal: Port Blend


Port is a fortified wine produced in the Douro region of Portugal. To achieve a sweet, high alcohol final product, brandy is added to the fermenting juice, stopping fermentation while sugar is still present in the must. Although more than 80 different grape varieties are authorized in blending, only five make up the majority of Port produced, each adding a unique profile to the finished blend. "Port-style" wines are created the world over using a bevy of traditional and non-traditional varieties.

Touriga Nacional produces small, dark-skinned grapes with high tannins. These grapes give Port grip, body, and structure.

Touriga Francesca is thinner skinned, lighter in tannins than Touriga Nacional, and contributes fruit, aroma, suppleness and roundness.

Tinta Roriz (Portuguese name for Tempranillo) adds high sugar content, low acidity, color and fruit.

Tinta Barroca is known for producing wines of delicacy and finesse, with smooth velvety fruit. It brings sweetness and ripeness to the final blend.

Tinto Cao produces fine and complex wines. Unfortunately, its painfully small yields have reduced plantings to almost insignificant levels.
