Backward and structured, though a bit coarse. Brilliant, deep ruby color, with a hint of garnet on the edge. Currant, floral and berry aromas. Big and chewy, with plenty of fruit and tannins.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal.

Deep ruby colour with some browning at the edge; was fine and elegant on the palate with some fruit showing but at the end there was some dryness; perhaps past its peak? It was overshadowed by the 82 Pichon-Baron on the night

About This Producer

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Chateau Pontet-Canet wines are very concentrated, yet elegant, and have tremendous aging potential. The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet, as well as an additional red blend called Benjamin de Pontet.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
