Tasted three times over a two month period, this youthful yet profoundly complex wine gets my nod as the finest Leoville-Las-Cases ever made. It reveals massive proportions yet extraordinary purity, elegance, and balance. This dense ruby/purple-colored 1982 still looks and tastes as if it were 5-8 years old. The nose offers up blazingly well-delineated, pure aromas of creme de cassis, cherry jam, minerals, and toasty new oak. This unctuously-textured, gorgeously rich, pure, super-concentrated, low acid effort concludes with a 45+ second finish. There is still tannin to shed in this unbelievably fresh, lively, full-bodied, vibrant wine.

($250-$412) Full medium ruby. Aromas of currant, black cherry, licorice, minerals and flowers. Thick, sweet and deep; still young but in a gentler, lower-acid style than either the '86 or '96. Still, this boasts sneaky intensity and wonderful persistence. Tannins are substantial but thoroughly ripe.

A racy, classy, silky wine. Inky-ruby color. Black cherry, mineral and wet earth aromas. Medium-bodied, with very silky tannins and a long, superfine finish. Has always been excellent.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal.

Deep rusty ruby. Very firm and intense and pure on the nose. Almost a decongestant it's so direct! Lots of acidity on the palate though. The nose is so much more alluring than the palate! Very dry/drying finish. For smelling not drinking. Let's see if it mellows during the evening... (It did not.)

About This Producer

The Second Growth classified estate of Leoville Las Cases continues to produce wines of exceptional quality, rivaling those of the First Growth producers. The wines are full-bodied, concentrated and complex, and have tremendous aging potential. Typical blends consist of over 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with lesser amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Bargain hunters should also keep an eye out for the estate's second label, Clos du Marquis.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
