There is an explosion of fruit and tannins in the mouth but at the same time this wine is in total harmony. Deep dark ruby, with blackberries and violets on the nose, full-bodied, with masses of blackberry flavors, full, hard tannins and a very long finish. Will age for decades.

For The Love of Port | Rating: 97

From an OWC purchased in early 1990's. Decanted for 8 hours (we ate early) prior to consumption; poured for my extended family after our Thanksgiving meal. Not as dark as expected, but a brilliant shade of cranberry. From the moment it was decanted, this had a fabulous fragrance of fresh flowers, lavender, licorice and Sultana raisins. Once poured, it was immediately approachable, exuding power and excellent structure. Intermixed notions of black cherry and plum with prominent yet round tannins. Opened in deference to Jenny's birth year and Taylor's birthday, everyone loved this bottle. The aftertaste was long and profound with a very smooth finish. This particular bottle was more evolved than others I have enjoyed recently.

Buying Guide - 2nd Edition (1989) | Rating: 96

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1977 has consistently been at the top of my list of vintage ports in this great vintage, although the Dow, Graham, and Fonseca are equally splendid. It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power, but is should not be touched before 2000.

Ruby red, but already signs of brown on the edge. Strong aromas of dried figs, followed by orange peel, flowers, and ripe cherries. Dried plums and dates on the palate, and a hint of licorice. Powerful finish that lasts for 30 seconds.

Cork loose, saturated. Pushed directly into bottle. Clear Garnet, clear rim. Brandy nose. Very potent. Apricot, some caramel & chocolate. Excellent considering condition of cork. Very apricot, very potent.

About This Producer

The 300-year-old estate, home to some of world's finest Port, is located high up in the Duoro region of Oporto, Portugal. Relatives of the estate's original owners still control the vineyards today. Referred to as the "Latour of Port," Taylor's has been known for centuries as the premier shipper of superior Vintage Ports, Tawny Ports, and its signature Late Bottled Vintage Ports. Both the '92 and '94 vintages received 100 points from Wine Spectator, while the '94 also came in as the top wine of its year.

Wine Varietal: Port Blend

Port is a fortified wine produced in the Douro region of Portugal. To achieve a sweet, high alcohol final product, brandy is added to the fermenting juice, stopping fermentation while sugar is still present in the must. Although more than 80 different grape varieties are authorized in blending, only five make up the majority of Port produced, each adding a unique profile to the finished blend. "Port-style" wines are created the world over using a bevy of traditional and non-traditional varieties.

Touriga Nacional produces small, dark-skinned grapes with high tannins. These grapes give Port grip, body, and structure.

Touriga Francesca is thinner skinned, lighter in tannins than Touriga Nacional, and contributes fruit, aroma, suppleness and roundness.

Tinta Roriz (Portuguese name for Tempranillo) adds high sugar content, low acidity, color and fruit.

Tinta Barroca is known for producing wines of delicacy and finesse, with smooth velvety fruit. It brings sweetness and ripeness to the final blend.

Tinto Cao produces fine and complex wines. Unfortunately, its painfully small yields have reduced plantings to almost insignificant levels.
