Professional Reviews For This Wine

Bordeaux Book(1998) | Rating: 95

This is a sensational Petrus that has drunk well since the mid-1970s. Plum/garnet in color with noticeable orange at the rim, the chocolate, mocha, sweet, fruit-scented bouquet is followed by a rich, velvety, full-bodied wine with layers of silky fruit. The 1971 must surely be the wine of the vintage. Light to moderate tannins and high alcohol will continue to preserve this plump, unctuous wine for another decade. This is Petrus at its most seductive. Last tasted, 3/94.

About This Producer

Petrus is a made almost entirely of Merlot grapes grown in Bordeaux's right bank Pomerol appellation. Although never officially classified, the chateau has long been considered on par with the First Growths from the left bank. The ownership of the estate has passed between the Arnaud family in the 19th century, to Madame Loubat at the end of WWII, and finally to Jean-Pierre Moueix in recent years. Petrus's clay soil is rich in iron and the estate's average vine age is 40 years. Chateau Petrus produces approximately 3,000 cases of wine each year. The most legendary vintages for Petrus include 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1955, 1959, and 1961, in addition to recent success in 1982, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003. Petrus's flavor profile typically features aromas of ripe mulberry, black currant and spicy vanilla oak. The wine has incredible power, depth and richness which allow it to age for decades.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
