USA - California - Sonoma - Sonoma Coast

Red Pinot Noir
Producer Notes

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem... More »

Bright ruby. Heady, expansive bouquet of raspberry compote, cherry-vanilla and gingerbread, with notes of white pepper and licorice in the background. Smooth and fleshy in the mouth, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and nuances of candied flowers and herbs. Pretty hefty but by no means thick--in fact this is pretty lithe. Finishes with very good clarity and smoky, floral persistence.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a great introduction to the style of Pinot prevalent on the coast. Flowers, mint and red berries come together beautifully in this energetic, vibrant Pinot. Sweet floral notes add brightness and lift on the high-toned finish.

This spicy Pinot delivers black cherry, plum and raspberry notes. This is medium- to full-bodied, and delicate, with silky tannins and a long, pure finish that's quite attractive.

This wine is not doing it for me, very tight and harsh, sour raspberry & dark cherry but not pleasant fruit. Only slightly improving with some air, light/medium bodied, gave up after one glass. Will revisit tomorrow but don't have much hope.

Pretty floral nose with fresh clean fruit. Flavor is subtle, focused, and quite acidic even at this age, with crisp mineral and wet stone. Really grabs the palate on the finish. Little if any oak influence. More subtle than the Central Coast, but with greater depth and complexity.

Medium Pinot Color. Nose is soft and full of coffee and toasted spice. Hints of blueberry fruit and floral nuances. Palate is very young and firm. Solid blackberry and dark druit. Spicy front, leads into an almost herbal mid to late palate. Fruit goes along for the entire ride. Herbal more like a perfumed or floral hint. Solid acidic structure, with firm tannins. This is very young, and I would suggest holding for at least 3 years. A lot of character here, and should develop nicely.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
