Producer Notes

"If the blessed slopes of the Cote d'Or are home to the ultimate expression of Chardonnay, then Anne-Claude Leflaive could be regarded as the magician, some might use the word "shaman", who can conjure wine like no other from this propitious terroir." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate More »

($145; I tasted a cuve that got 40% new oak, as the other components of this wine were only two-thirds of the way through their secondary fermentation) Pure aromas of yellow peach, spices and menthol, plus a slightly peppery, herbal quality. Then fat and supple in the mouth, with a strong element of grilled hazelnut. In a fairly thick style but has good energy. Incidentally, Remy pointed out that the 2008s, as a set, display "less ripe fruit aromas than the 2009s but also a lot of sucrosite

Fine and tight and introvert. Quite pure and lean and mineral with just a hint of wild flowers. A hint of bitter quinine on the finish. This should eventually be very pure and fine but one will have to wait. Our sample is from a tank with more new oak than the final blend will have.

Still raw and primary, but shows good intense flavors of peach, apple and grapefruit. There's also a mineral streak that manifests on the finish and just keeps coming at you on the long aftertaste. Powerful, yet sleek and nervous.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
