($95) Saturated red-ruby color. Pungently mineral aromas of dark cherry and graphite. Rich, broad and dry, with firm underlying structure giving shape to the plush flavors of dark berries, black tea and graphite. Finishes with firm, dusty tannins, a distinctly silky impression and terrific lift. The tiny clusters and berries produced in the heart of this Sonoma Coast vineyard produced barely two tons per acre of fruit in 2007. Wonderfully deep and soil-inflected California pinot.

As for the Pinot Noirs, all are from the Sonoma Coast and are 100% destemmed and aged largely in 100% new Francois Freres Burgundy barrels. The 2007 Pinot Noir Joli Coeur is a prodigious Pinot Noir. It has more earth, roasted herbs, forest floor, and even more intense black cherry and black raspberry notes. What sets it apart is an absolutely sumptuous texture and stunning length of close to 45 seconds. These gorgeous Pinots are great achievements and set for 5-8 years of life.

Dark in the glass with deep aromas and flavors of vanilla, oak and berries. Smooth and full bodied with true elegance and great integration of the tannins and fruit to yield a regal wine with a long finish. However, when in the glass it seemed to loose some of its smooth character after an hour. We'll see how this evolves and changes.
