France - Southern Rhone - Chateauneuf du Pape

Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent... ($98) Bright ruby. Highly expressive aromas of raspberry, cherry, lavender, smoked meat and minerals. Racy and sharply focused, with juicy red and dark berry flavors, silky texture and a gentle candied floral quality. Impressively pure and balanced, with outstanding finishing clarity and lingering sweetness. Does this ever really finish? By no means a blockbuster, but delivers very serious palate impact.

Bottled May 2008.Tasted at the domaine in Nov 2008 immediately after tasting samples of the super-opulent 2007 so it seemed much less expressive on the nose initially. Rather medicinal notes and very firm in structure with the tannins less ripe than in 2007 but very refreshing with even a hint of bitterness on the finish. Very persistent but also very dry on the finish.

Surprisingly closed and structured on this occasion (bottles from my cellar are much more ready to go), the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape showed a savory edge in its bouquet garni, pepper, currants and licorice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, structured and tannic, with impressive mid-palate depth and concentration, give bottles a few years in the cellar; it's certainly a 20+-year wine and a serious success in this under-the-radar vintage.

This has terrific purity, with a stunningly pure beam of cassis holding sway over fruitcake, melted licorice and incense notes. Shows impressive density for the vintage, but this is suave, elegant and seamless through the finish, with terrific underlying minerality.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
