A classic styled Cabernet Sauvignon, the Mondavi Oakville is always one of the better bargains from the Oakville appellation in the heart of Napa Valley. Color: A dark red core with ruby red edges Nose & Palate: The nose was classic Oakville Cabernet, with graphite, cassis, currants, even some bell pepper notes. The palate was medium bodied, with medium grain tannins and a nice finish recalling the tannins and fruit.

The past two weekends our travel youth hockey team played in 6 games in two cities. The parents consummed many wines partially from my cellar. A quick rundown: Phelps Napa 05 - Nice wine with aa touch of vanilla, color, body intact. The 06 was slightly better. The 06 Merlot similar wine with less complexity. The Mondavi Napa 08 Cab is drinking really well - Soft, complex flavors perfect color and body. The Mondavi Oakville's (04 and 06) were VERY dry, more oak and less fruit. Still a good wine, color and body were in good shape. The 689 was very nice, different in flavor profile then the others - color was perfect the body was slightly lighter.

winemaker's notes: A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Syrah. Dark and densely concentrated, expressive aromas of blackberry, currants and subtle notes of thyme and cinnamon lead to flavors of blackberry, black plum and a bit of black olive. Knit together with big, mouth-coating tannins, this is an engagingly well-structured, bold-statement wine. critical acclaim: "Slightly superior to the 2005, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as a creme de cassis, spice box, and floral-scented bouquet, and a medium to full-bodied finish. A strong effort, it should drink nicely for 12-15 years." 90 Points The Wine Advocate

Quietly surpassing the Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cab as the top non-reserve cab in the family. Aromas of ripe currant and red plum on the nose make this wine come alive. Full bodied and well structured with short, firm tannins in the finish. A good wine and Megan enjoyed this one very much.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
