($105) Bright medium ruby. Redcurrant, minerals and herbs on the intense nose, lifted by a floral element. Juicy, spicy and downright suave, with redcurrant and raspberry flavors complicated by tobacco leaf. Nothing overripe about this 2006. This really spreads out on the palate without leaving any impression of weight. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent length.

The dense purple-hued 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is fashioned from a gravelly site that was probably an old riverbed. A beautiful effort, it reveals notes of scorched rocks, blue and black fruits, lead pencil shavings, and sweet toasty oak along with dazzling purity, a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel, and a long, smooth finish. It has avoided the vintage's hard, spiky tannins, and should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15+ years.

Drink Dates 2010-2015

A dense, rich, extracted style, with dry earthy currant, cassis, wild berry, herb and sage notes that are full-bodied and very dry and tannic on the finish, ending with a strong oak presence.

Dr. Crane did not disappoint this year with Mike Hirby again at the helm. Fruit there is ample doses but extremely well balanced with a elongated finish.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
