I suppose I can understand why people have been turned off by this - but I am big fan of Dettori's unadulterated au natural approach. He proudly states "I don't make what you like" - though hey I really liked it. The heat on this wine is noticeable and it's unfined and unfiltered...16% alcohol is pretty high, but this is nothing port like, it's decently integrated, though you'll feel its effects. This is a masculine wine that doesn't mess around - lots of stone, earth, blood, there's spice- cinnamon, perhaps it was cardamom and fruit wise bing cherry and definitely raspberry. It beautifully completed the meal of mozzarella, basil and tomato pasta, the basil especially popping with these flavors. It was also my first experience with the Monica grape, which I'd say has the texture of something grenache based but with quite different. Give this a shot and you'll have something different, yet familiar.
