USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Still going strong; this one has a lot of life left to it. Bold and structured, with ripe fruits and well integrated tannins.

My favorite of 3 Insignias we tasted ('95, '05, '08). The '05 is really in a sweet spot right now with great balance and flavor. Firm underlying structure, but no pushy tannins. Really good - sorry it was my last bottle.

not a big nose - light spices. but the taste lingers and is awesome. Almost chewy! Chocolate and cherry, smooth tannins. Definitely worth the wait of letting it breath for 30 minutes.

Amazing nose of bright cherry, blueberry, and dark cocao. Tannins present but firm and integrated. mid palate chalk, chocolate, rich red fruit, and minerals. Smooth finish that goes down like water and lingers forever. Get more

Nice nose, sweet red fruit, cherry, menthol. Real nice mouth feel and tannin structure. Medium in length finish lacks, astringent.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
