Producer Notes

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet... More »

($120-$190) Good full ruby-red. Complex, enticing aromas of black raspberry, licorice, minerals, bitter chocolate, lead pencil and pungent cedar; just this side of exotic. Wonderfully silky, sweet and thick, with a powerful minerality framing the currant, graphite and spice flavors. This boasts superb inner-mouth energy and great length, with the full, ripe tannins totally enrobed by the wine's mid-palate richness. (My sample of the 2006 was old and tired, so I'll wait until next year to report on the finished wine; this was a star in the early going.)

Burly and rich. Very soft texture now though again the acidity seems quite dominant. Still chewy but certainly very polished. Not obviously biodynamic.

Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005 Medocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10 the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit are present along with a hint of licorice and background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years.

Black in color, with aromas of blackberry, black licorice, tar, mineral and fresh flowers. Full-bodied and powerful, with ultrafine tannins that last for minutes on the palate. A polished, though-provoking wine. Shows wonderful purity of Cabernet Sauvignon. 20,830 cases made.

Go to the head of the class. While the 1996 for me was the wine of the night, this wine is clearly on a different level from everything else this evening. A nose that makes you close your eyes and breathe deep. This 2005 has a lift, an elevation, and a silkiness that is simply stunning. So well balanced, and not nearly putting all its moves on the field yet. Still, obvious to everyone: in a lineup of excellent wines, classic wines from P-C, and in the presence of the owner and an expert taster, the 2005 is the pedigree. It IS a cut above the rest, it DOES deserve its reputation. It WILL be one of the most amazing wines you will ever have. Hoard and hold! And what a gauntlet thrown down for 2009!

Opened at Hal's during New Year's dinner with Chris and Johnny. Wow, very good. Deep, complex with fruit and licorice flavors including a long finish! Decanted the bottle for nearly 2 hours before drinking.

Cali cab under a Bordeaux label, this wine was hot, heavy, full of blueberry and plum, and out of balance. Check back in 10 years.

I've enjoyed just about every 21st century Pontet Canet, with the 2003 perhaps stealing my heart more so than any other, but the 2005 makes me think twice about my previous favorite. This is as chiseled a wine as any, as if it were cut from a Cabernet based stone on Mount Olympus. Defined, but polished flavors of cedar, black currant and spice cascade along a sinewy backbone that is flat out admirable. While the ?03 may be a touch more exotically loaded w/ fruit, this 2005 may please palates that value traditional structure over sensuality

Ultra rich, dark fruit with a hint of flint.Oppulent would be the best way to describe this over the top masterpiece.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
