Producer Notes

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. ($69-$100) Deep red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, plum, licorice and coconutty oak. Round, suave and ripe, with lovely depth of flavor and a pliant, full texture for the year. This doesn't have quite the thrust of the 2006, but it's lively and fresh, and finishes ripely tannic and long.

Very deep crimson. Succulent modern ripeness on the nose. Almost chocolatey. This should give a great deal of pleasure to modernists, but the inky finish is a little bit of a worry.

Drink Dates 2009-2020

A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020+.

Loads of currant and blackberry, with hints of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Round and generous for the vintage.

Very deep; almost impenetrable. Liqueur-like, plummy, but not sweet. Very tannic; with time in the glass it started to show the more exotic incense-like Cos style.

Loads of currant and blackberry, with hints of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Round and generous for the vintage. Best after 2011. Solid, with lots of chewy tannins, but they are relatively round and refined. Full-bodied and long. Jean-Guillaume Prats, the manager, says that the wine was very high in alcohol (13.6 percent) yet also high in acidity. Almost 95-100. Score range: 92-94

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
