While the nose is very ripe, indeed almost too ripe with background notes of mocha and ripe and jammy plum that borders on prune, the aromas are reserved and almost inexpressive and it is only with aggressive swirling can you generate much aromatic lift. The big-boned, indeed robust flavors are intense and well-concentrated but not especially well balanced. Still, there is reasonably good detail here if not elegance on the finish where the acidity is noticeable if not dominant. While certainly not a bad wine, it lacks obvious pinot character.

($75) Dark red. Highly expressive aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and raspberry accented by cinnamon and white pepper. Impressively pure and energetic, with vibrant red and dark berry flavors, subtle minerality and a fine-grained, silky texture. Finishes with excellent energy and a late note of floral pastille.

Violet, cranberry, cherry, pomegranate, and rose petal aromas jump from the glass of the tangy, medium-bodied 2004 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard. Fresh and lively with good acidity and not the weight or intensity of the Cuvee Catherine, it is a beautifully fragrant, complex Pinot Noir to drink over the next decade.

A great wine and I totally enjoyed it. A nice barnyard note combined with fruity and hints of flowers on the nose. It's deliciously sweet and tender. A rich pinot with well structured body and nicely balanced flavors that made me want to take more sips. A better finish might help. However, with the nice nose and body, I am happy and willing to be not picky on the finish.

Had this many times. It is just too ripe for my liking. This time I tried to judge it for its style. Very pleasant initially, however turned into alcoholic mess after 5 hours. Should I wait 10 hours?

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
