Red Syrah
Producer Notes

Ann Colgin, a former fine art dealer, began her label in 1992, and it quickly became one of the most sought-after names in Napa. Winemaking duties were originally handled by Helen Turley, then Mark Aubert in 1999. Production of the Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard is very small, with only about 350 cases produced each vintage. As with most of the world's truly great wines, Colgin's... More »

Good ruby-red color. Captivating wild scents of black fruits, licorice, menthol, sage, black olive, truffle and leather. Wonderfully dense and fresh, with primary dark berry flavors framed by crushed rock and complicated by a gamey element. This beautifully balanced syrah offers an uncanny blend of energy and lushness. Finishes with building but extremely fine-grained tannins and outstanding persistence. Approachable now but should evolve gracefully for at least several years.

Aubert demonstrates a superb know-how with Syrah. These wines are macerated for 35-45 days, and given frequent pump-overs as well as punch-downs. They are aged completely in French oak. The floral-filled 2004 IX Syrah Estate (486 cases) offers super-pure blue and blackberries intermixed with hints of new saddle leather and meat. High but sweet tannins, powerful flavors, and an overall sense of poise characterize this stunning effort.

So young. Needs a ton of decant time. But has a decent, long lasting finish.

Beautiful wine. Bouquet of flowers, black currant, olive, subtle meat and a whiff of green pepper. Full bodied and very well balanced, juicy mid palate. High alcohol you know is there but this was not hot by any means.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
