Dark but by no means opaque. Leather, spice and some black fruits. Intense, exuberant, but also fresh. A real success for 2003. Double decanted an hour in advance. Continued to open throughout the meal. Very nice. Still youthful; more years ahead.

This opened up nicely over the course of the evening into a wonderful wine. Chocolate, blackberry, tobacco, truffle on the nose. Well balanced and structured on the palate with soft herbs, spices and licorice emerging. Long finish.

Les Origines is a single vineyard estate Ch?teauneuf that rests on relatively flat red clay strewn with large stones. The 2003 consists of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourv?dre, and 20% Syrah. It was aged in new Alliers oak for 18 months. It is deeply colored with thin lightly pigmented legs. Attractive aromas of violets, raspberry, and new oak with a bit of black pepper and heat. Thick, sweet, and powerful with barely sufficient acidity and light to moderate tannin. A huge step up over from the disappointing standard 2003 cuv?e ? it reminds me in many ways of a lower level Turley Zinfandel.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
