Producer Notes

Plain and simple, Angelo Gaja is the biggest name in Italian wine. The Gaja winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by four generations of the Gaja family, with Angelo Gaja running the operation since the 1960s. Angelo is credited with modernizing Barbaresco and Barolo wines, having pioneered the use of controlled-temperature fermentation (for reducing... More »

Monstrous with tar and perfume. Awesome mouth fell and very long finish. Possibly the best wine I have every drunk.

Sori Tildin is the smallest of GAJ's crus. It is an eight-acre south-facing hilltop vineyard ("sori" means a hilltop with southern exposure in Italian) situated in the Barbaresco district. Just like the other GAJA crus since 1996 the Sori Tildin has only been allowed to use the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC as opposed to the Barbaresco DOCG because of Angelo Gaj's use of Barbera. Sori Tildin is my personal favorite of the Barbaresco based crus. Just like its peers in the Barbaresco zone, the 2001 Sori Tildin has 95% Nebbiolo and 5% Barbera in its profile. It was fermented in stainless steel prior to aging for one year in barrique and one year in large oak casks. It has a brilliant medium ruby red hue. A powerful but gorgeously rendered nose of sweet concentrated black cherry, earth, herbs, and milk with nuances of vanilla and mint. Significant tannin and virtually perfect levels of acidity. A very long finish which while velvety in texture still retains an intriguing firmness. More masculine and structured than the Costa Russi but more forgiving then the Sori San Lorenzo. The Sori Tildin is my favorite wine in GAJ's entire 2001 portfolio.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
