Tasted On 01/16/2016
I tried to go by the drink dates listed in the community info. As this was a 2001 Brunello, I thought it was going to be past its prime. I was dead wrong. This wine had pretty strong tannins given the age. With strong fruit at the forefront and a woody, leathery, licorice finish, this wine had a lot of life left in it. I did decant it for about an hour to allow it to open up. By the time our dinner was finished, it was completely open and kept on pleasing. I read some of the other reviews and was wondering how the wine was stored. I have kept this bottle in a subterranean built cellar with no refrigeration units and it has kept perfectly. Dare I say it probably had another two to three years left before it went the other way. I found this bottling of Siro to be pleasing and able to stand the test of time.
Opened for 2 hours prior to drinking; not decanted. Dark red color beginning to show some age at the rim. Not yielding much on the nose; even quite a bit of swirling only able to pull some faint red fruit and flower aromas. On the palate, this wine possesses good acidity, though the flavors are light at best; not much mid-palate as this wine lacks intensity and persistence. This bottle may be atypical, but based on this result, I'd begin to drink remaining 2001s soon. Decanting may have improved aromas and flavors, but this bottle was a bit disappointing. Definitely didn't show nearly as well as bottle tried in 2011.
Decanted for two hours and drank over 24 hour period. Initial impression is a muted nose. Palate is not in balance with a terrible aftertaste. After three hours it fleshes out into a nice Brunello. I would agree that it has a little too much oak. Nice wine, nothing special.
Day two: Left in the decanter overnight to see if it would last. Not only did it last, but it improved drastically. It still has a lackluster nose, but the palate has balanced out into something much better. Nice rich fruits, good acidity and fine tannins. Lasts 45-60 seconds.
Overall this wine was good, but not great. Even with the improvement on day two, I would not give this wine a good QPR rating.
