($150; bottled two weeks prior to my visit, following 38 months in oak) Superripe aromas of pepper, chocolate and menthol. Wonderfully deep flavors of cherries and spice. A very fresh, elegant wine with compelling sweetness but also excellent backbone. Really coats the palate on the very long aftertaste, finishing with strong spiciness and great lift. This makes the Guigal 2000 La-La wines seem almost soft by comparison.

95% Syrah, 5% Viognier, 35 hl/ha yield, fermented in closed stainless steel vats, 3 week cuvaison, aged 38 months in new oak casks.Youthful medium garnet. Really sweet and meaty nose - as if you were immersed in its intensity. As well as this meatiness there was a perfumed, aromatic lift. An immediate standout in the Côte Rôties tasted up to this point. Rich firm and fine-grained. Good concentration and length. (JH)

Tasting through the six components of the 2001 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis suggests a wine with far greater depth, more structure, higher acidity than the 2000, and a long, heady finish. All six parcels were rated between 89 and 96 points.

Flashy toast up front lets notes of mesquite and incense permeate the dark cherry, blackberry and coffee flavors in this sweet and succulent red, which shows cocoa on the finish. 2,500 cases made.

Never been wowed by this wine but the 2001is drinking beautifully at the moment.

The wine was a bit cloudy, with a slight musty note on the nose at the beginning; it was rather port-like on the palate, with some tannin

Wow. Smoked meat and flowers on the nose. Roasted meats, Asian spice, baked cherry fruit on the palate. Ends with a finish of chewy sweet tannins. This still has a long way to go but is drinking wonderfully now.

Sampled while decanting. Sediment in the neck from laying down. Ruby color, opaque but not overly dark. Thick glycerin tears. Immediate spicy, meaty and gamey nose. Pungent attack and a coating mouthfeel, long lingering finish of white pepper and bacon renderings that grips the sides of the tongue and goes on for over a minute. Attractive with lamb. Very satisfying. Good for another decade at least.
