Producer Notes

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent... Decanted for an hour. Smooth with subtle herbal notes, no tannins. A very good wine but this vintage not a blockbuster

Plenty of good red fruits with good complexity on the palate. Medium tannin and medium acidity. More smokiness and syrah-based spicy flavour float out after half an hour. Interesting wine and will definitely improve.

There is nothing hiding in here! Auction bottle, held about a year. Very pretty ruby color, and a vibrancy in the bouquet that shows ripe raspberry, spice and with time, mushrooms. Very big, balanced and grippy -- not a luscious or squishy ripe wine, it is a chewy blend that explodes and persists, all with great class and length. Comes across as strong, youthful and quite willing to go 15 rounds - or years. Try again in 2011.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
