Producer Notes

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. Nice, very youthful yet, some kind unevolved, so I suggest couple of more years of bottle aging. With air in glass starts to opens classic Paulliac aromas like the leathery scent, red currant, earthy notes. Tannins stills somehow backward although they are polished or fine grain. It may turns into agreat time with a lot of patience...time will tell.

Very deep color and closer to brick than I thought. Great nose with vegetal/olive elements, smoke, clove, and funk. The initial fruit is on the red side but hidden somewhat. The acidity and tannins are perfectly balanced and the wine has smoothed out enough to drink, with a very long, slightly bitter finish

Not there yet. The signature aromas are developing for this vintage, it does have its own characteristic fragrance, it is spicier on the nose, a little piquant along with very high quality fruit. Not giving great pleasure at the moment. After tasting the 1996, and following with the 2001 (which is in a great spot right now), the 2000 is not on its game yet. Hold another 3+ years. Let's see if it can take the high quality fruit and develop the range of secondaries that were so well displayed in that 1996. If it can, then it will soar because the fruit is even better. But so far, no. Patience!

Fat with blackberry, black currant and heavy handed tannins. Tom pointed out that in this and the following PCs, one could truly observe the hold of Parkerization. The wood/leather/sour cherry flavors in the older wines were now missing and replaced with coffee and chocolate.

Based on early reports, this wine looked like one to purchase in quantity. Given the (probably excessive) tannins, I am glad I resisted. Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine sees 60% new oak while aging. Dark purple red color with good pigmentation. An expansive nose of leather, plum, lead pencil, black cherry and oak. A ton of scratchy tannin assaults the palate. Perhaps due to the abundance of tannins, right now the wine is simple in the mouth. The wine shows plenty of length but I am seriously concerned about the wine?s structure. Drink 2015 to 2025. 91? points (if the tannins ever resolve this rating will appear low.)

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
