USA - California - Napa - Napa Valley

Red Bordeaux Blend
Producer Notes

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.

Nice but not your typical Insignia of late. Good effort for the beginning of the Insignia wines. Deep ruby color, medium tannins, chocolate and berries.

Gorgeous deep red color to the rim, very minimal browning at the edges, nose of raspberries, cherries and saddle leather, big tannins long one minute finish typical of Insignia, not as flavorful on the palate as most Insignia's, perhaps getting on in years. Drink over next 2-3 years. Overall a very nice wine, drink with red meat or Swiss cheese. Not a classic wine but very pleasant.

Excellent right now. Still mostly primary color, aroma, and flavors, but starting to develop some secondary nuances. This will be a long lived Insignia, probably peaking in 5-10 years, and holding until 2030.

Deep purple color. Nice aromas of cedar & blackberry. Not as full bodied as other vintages of Insignia but very nicely balanced and elegant.

A very good bottle. Not as big as some of the younger Insignias can be, but nice flavors and very pleasant with food.

A great bottle of Insignia. Terrific nose with cinammon, vanilla, and raspberry. Nice balance of fruit and tannins and a great finish.

As before tastings, it is all finesse, stills youthful and have exquisite fruit-perfume arome. Nice finish and smooth tannins, little short on body and flavor complexity or depth.

Excellent length and palate presence if a touch chunky at the present time. Lots of black olive and plums in the nose.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
