Producer Notes

"Valpolicella's magician." "The master of the Veneto." "The patriarch of Amarone." "The traditionalist." Not bad for a winemaker who simply follows the winemaking customs of his forefathers. The 1999 Valpolicella unhesitatingly garnered a well-deserved Tre Biccheri from the forum of tasters at this year's VinItaly. It is a forceful Valpolicella full of skin-bursting, velour-textured red fruits accented with healthy sides of meaty and spiced essences. It is a noble effort that at times almost believes, given half a chance, that it could be an Amarone...drink some now to experience its full-bodied flavour, but be certain to stash away a few bottles for future indulgence. Take this out for those nights where game, braised meats or root vegetables feature prominently on the menu.

Right out of the bottle, everyone said, "this is a really good wine." Perfect balance, nice blend of structure with fruit and quite fruity with out being a fruit bomb. Kind of reminded me of a slightly tart filled fruit roll-up.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
