Marinus is Bernardus? top of the line wine and consists of 75% Cabernet, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Franc. Raised in 50% new French oak for 16 months, the wine shows deep red color with purple edging. A warm nose of chocolate, hickory, herbs, and smoked beef brisket. Taut acidity coupled with slightly scratchy tannins. Finishes too soon with bitter chocolate flavor at the end. Lacks fruit and is a touch green but is quite smooth and supple ? a California St. Estephe. The 2000 Marinus is a few points better than the 99.
