Producer Notes

Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. Enticingly deep dusty purple with little rim variation. The dust/must continues to the bouquet where it mingles with cooked blueberries, black cherry, chocolate, cola nut, and a ton of 'wine making detritus' (sticks/stems/etc). Definitely an old school vibe from this wine. A tidal wave of sumptuous fruit strikes the palate, but this quickly dissipates to reveal a chewy, well integrated structure of tannin and acid that pushes through a 1 minute finish. Great wine.

Here lies the necessary slap in the face as the aromatics of number three remind me why this region charges up my batteries. A gorgeous vision of a wine, w/ oodles of black truffles, cedar, graphite, cr?me de cassis, raspberry ganache and forest floor notes that left a tactile, engrossing impression on me immediately. The mouthfeel is explosive and striking, with a gorgeous sense of vibrancy and multidimensional texture that renders me pleasured and clamoring for another sip. Who needs multiple cuvees? Vieux Donjon was indeed the bargain of the vintage

Le Vieux Donjon is a trustworthy old school producer of slightly rustic Chateauneuf. In the most special vintages (when they say special they mean special ?during the nineties this wine was only produced in 1990 and 1998), the single best lot of old vine wine is kept back to be bottled separately. The wine is mainly reserved for the consumption of friends and family. Luckily, some of it makes it into the distribution channel. The wine appears like a standard bottle from Le Vieux save that it is marked by a cheap gold sticker that indicates the wine is the Cuvee Speciale. The wine has already thrown a heavy sediment (they bottle the wine unfined and unfiltered) and shows thick caking down the side of the bottle where it has laid in the cellar. Black red nearly opaque colored wine with lots of thick slightly pigmented legs. A raucous, perfumed, and complex nose of Epoisses, leather, plum, sweet tree bark, rose, sage, pepper (white and black), lavender, slight mint, cranberry, and dusky raspberry. In the nose the wine reminds me quite a lot of Bonneau. Generally, Bonneau, Rayas, and Donjon can be counted one to be the last to harvest their grapes in any vintage therefore the similarity is not surprising. Suave and enticing flavors cascade across the palate. Despite the elegance, the wine's depth of flavor is impressive. Tannin become prominent starting in the mid palate but nevertheless the wine finishes long with complex (but not fruit derived) flavors. Acidity is high but well integrated. Chateauneuf rarely gets better than this.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
