Slightly past its peak? From a relatively weak vintage in Napa, this Silver Oak 1998 Alexander Valley is now completely ready to drink. Shows brick colors on the rim with wonderful clarity. But nose seemed a bit tired trying to squeeze away the last bit of fruit. However, improves over time showing spices and cigar aromas of well integrated oak and fruits. On the palate, it is well-balanced with just the right amount of tannin. The signature enticing finish of Silver Oak is present. This ain't a blockbuster but still enjoyable.

Drinking very well, with strong oak and little fruit. Dark brown color. Will not last much longer. Looking forward to the magnum at Christmas....

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
