Red Bordeaux Blend - Fifth Growth
Producer Notes

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. 92 RP-WA An old style Pauillac, yet made with far more purity and richness than the estate's ancient vintages, this broad-shouldered, muscular, classic wine exhibits a saturated purple color, and sensationally dense, rich, concentrated, cassis flavors that roll over the palate with impressive purity and depth. The wine is tannic and closed, but powerful and rich. It appears to possess length and intensity similar to the 1996. This is a great young Pauillac. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. The extraordinary effort that Alfred Tesseron is making at this property is reconfirmed with each new tasting note I write on Pontet-Canet. Having recently had the exceptionally impressive 1994 in several tastings, it is a pleasure to see this historic estate turning out wines that behave like super seconds rather than fifth-growths.

Retail purchase, held over 2 years. Great cork. First taste before decanting was tight, tannic and unyielding -- a 1995 for sure. Left in the decanter 2 hours, things get moving. Pale ruby red, medium full. Smoked cherries and saddle leather aromas confirmed on the palate. It keeps building. Good length. I would say another 5-8 years before reaching a peak. In contrast, the 1994 is fruit-forward and fades after a nice rush, and the 1996 is on high evolutionary track, with deeper maturation and a cut above. The 1995 still has a lot to say, and is taking its time. Very nice Pauillac, but not necessarily in the same manner as the best P-C vintages from 2003-2009.

A little tight at first with hints of pepper. Liberal use of new wood. Needs time to open up and reveal itself.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
