France - Southern Rhone - Chateauneuf du Pape

Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The 1994 seems less successful than my early tastings indicated. The high percentage of Mourvedre (40% versus the normal 30%) has given it an earthy, leathery character with hints of mushrooms and tree bark. Although dense and chewy, it remains tannic and firm. It will keep for two decades, but it is not a hedonistic example and how much pleasure it will provide remains to be seen.

A nice mix of red fruit, herb and sweetly earthy flavors give appealing complexity, while soft tannins make it accessible now. The long finish promises improvement with age.

Dark red robe with some browning at the edges; was decanted about 5 hours in advance and could have benefited from being opened earlier; had notes of spices and black fruits on the palate but tannins were very soft and it needs drinking now

Best bottle yet (there has been some bottle variability). Earlier bottles showed a bigger wine in body than the profound '89, but not as complex or elegant; now it has developed more elegance & complexity; intense but not over-extracted; good fruit; lots of earth & leather but not much bret; soft and approachable yet good grip and integrated tannins; long finish; ready now but will hold. An excellent CDP!

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
