Red Rhone Blend
Producer Notes

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Drinking beautifully with tannins fully absorbed and everything in balance. I don't think this gets any better though. I would drink now

Wow. Garnet colored. Strong fragrance of dark cherry wood with typical funk of barn stall. Blows off quickly. Slightly sweet with loads of flavor- cherry, prune, and tobacco, lush tannins, long finish. Can't get any better. Cork leaked a little but had no effect on wine. One of the most unique wines when both young and old I have tasted over the years.

Semitransparent ruby-orange with thin rim. Gorgeous, soaring aromas -- flavors to match -- mature but still vibrant and sweet CdP melange (garrigue, galets, rosemary, thyme, kirsch, framboise, blood orange, pomegranate, violets, and clean rather than funky leather). A "deft" touch of brett (as one sometimes speaks of oak treatment) that integrates perfectly. Very satisfying and mouth-filling if not as velvety in texture as some bottles I've had (and after an hour, it seemed a bit coarser than when first poured). One senses that this might begin to unravel or delaminate in five or six years, but drinking beautifully now.

Med. ruby w/ amber rim; lovely nose; absolutely delicious; very complex; soft; long, lingering finish; elegant; good intensity but more finesse than brute power; clean without the bret/barnyard notes typical of Beaucastle; ready, holding well w/plenty of life ahead.

A superb wine in its prime! Still shows the gorgeous fruit it had in its youth. Lavender, spice, violets, and black pepper. Amazing depth and color

Leather, spice, and layer of flora underneath. Great depth of aroma. Great with lamb.

Leather, plums, tar, earthiness, spice..... Strong tannins and structure... A great wine... Full, moth coating attack, with a plummy, cassis almost sweet overlay to spicy, leathery base...

Tasted from a magnum, this wine shows that it can still stand at least another decade in the cellar. A slightly muted nose of red fruits, spice, and warm heat. On the palate, the wine is plush with tons of sweet fruit, pepper, and spice. Probably drinking ? point from a 750, from magnum the wine will be better in another five to seven years. The 1991 Wine of the Year according to the Wine Spectator.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
