Drink Dates 2009-2015

Auction bottle purchased a month ago from Acker Merrill. Did not decant. Wet cork, removed intact. Beautiful color, clear garnet, light rim. Nose is complex, flowers in a muddy field, and a bit of old, scraped leather. The first glass is totally clean, integrated and exquisite. Supple, balanced, and pronounced acidity with red fruit character. Medium-full bodied, but texture is sublime, tender. The finish vanishes, then returns after 10 seconds and persists, not letting you go. Indeed, it pulls you back to the glass. Wonderful to drink now, 30 years old before the turn of the decade. Margaux are so often defined by a knockout nose, the best among the Firsts, in my experience. This 1979, not as much as other vintages. But, the texture, balance and length more than compensate. And, absolutely gorgeous color, truly. A 30 year old first growth, from a vintage of no particular account. What a pleasure! There simply is NO substitute for time in the bottle from great terroir. Drink now, with pleasure.

A flawed bottle may be affected by cork taint, heat (maderized), oxidation, or excessive sulfur. Additionally, some people consider wines tainted by Brettanomyces (Brett), a non-spore forming genus of yeast, a flaw although there is much controversy surrounding the subject.
