The 2017 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec displays an intense yellow color and offers a fascinatingly pure and chalky/smoky bouquet of crushed stones intertwined with sur-lie notes, oat milk and ripe, well-concentrated fruit aromas. After lots of aeration, you get some lactic notes here as well. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, juicy, very refined and elegant Vouvray with delicate tannins, good structure and sensual, slightly sweet fruit. The finish reveals great power but also grip, salt, finesse and enormous length. This is a pretty great wine, and it can age for decades, although it already drinks very well. Tasted in March 2019.

  • The Loire River is the longest river in France and the vineyards that lie along its banks comprise the Loire Valley wine region. France's third largest wine region is home to a collection of grapes, soils, and styles with not much in common aside from a cool climate provided by the northerly latitude. The Loire is best known for its classic expressions of both dry and sweet white wines as well as dry, relatively light-bodied reds.

Chenin Blanc is a non-aromatic variety with medium to full body, high acid, and the ability to produce dry, sweet, still, and sparkling wines. The greatest wines come from the Loire Valley, particularly the sub-regions of Touraine and Anjou-Saumur where the highest-quality versions have the ability to age for decades in bottle.

The best site for Chenin Blanc in Touraine is Vouvray, where still and sparkling wines are produced in both dry and sweet styles. A cool climate and clay soils mean grapes do not fully ripen, and the wines are light to medium in body with fresh fruit and floral notes. Look to Domaine Huet for beautiful wines of this style.

The best sites for Chenin Blanc in Anjou-Saumur are Savennièresand Coteaux du Layon. Grapes in Savennières are harvested late, producing full-bodied, complex, dry wines. Coteaux du Layon is located in the sheltered valley of the River Layon. Noble rot thrives in this environment, and the wines from these sites are sweet, displaying flavors of apricot and citrus peel with aromas of honey, toast, and hay developing with age. The best examples of these wines come from Domaine Des Baumard for dry wines and Domaine Delesvaux for sweet wines.

Chenin Blanc pairs well with sweet and sour foods, especially Southeast Asian cuisine, as well as fish, turkey, soft cheeses, and squash.
