Vinous | Rating: 96The 2017 Cheval Blanc bristles with tension. Because of severe frost damage, in 2017, the Grand Vin includes a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (14%), from gravelly soils, which gives the wine very unusual flavor and structure profile. Vibrant and pulsing with a real sense of direction, the 2017 is going to need a number of years to be at its very best. Even so, it is an utterly fascinating wine. The blend is 56% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, aging in 100% new oak.Author: Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate | Rating: 95The 2017 Cheval Blanc is composed of 56% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 14% Cabernet SauvignonƒA?A?an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens slowly to reveal a gorgeous lilacs, roses, licorice and black truffles nose over a compelling core of cassis, warm plums, wild blueberries and cigar box plus a waft of wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied, firm and earthy in character on the palate, it packs in tightly wound fruits and mineral accents, culminating in a long, perfumed finish. 50,000 bottles are to be produced.Author: Lisa Perrotti-Brown
Chateau Cheval Blanc, a 1er Grand Cru Classe (A), is the most renowned and sought-after producer in the St. Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The estate's 37 hectares yield primarily Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with small percentages of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard soils consist of sand, clay and gravel; the clay soil lending opulence and the gravel more tannin structure to the wine. Cheval Blanc is characterized by aromatic complexity such as Asian spice and finesse that lasts through the finish. This Cabernet Franc-based blend has the staying power to age at least 10 to 50 years for the best vintages.
Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
