From a St. Helena vineyard, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Crane Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) boasts tremendous fruit and ripeness along with hints of graphite, espresso roast, blackberries, creme de cassis, and spice. This rich, concentrated, prodigious effort should be enjoyed between 2008-2020+.

Good deep red. Cassis, chocolate, licorice and a floral topnote on the nose; shows an almost roasted ripeness. Highly concentrated, silky and supersweet, with the chocolate and loam flavors that characterize cabernet from this gravelly soil in a warm site. Chunky, substantial wine, finishing with big but fairly fine tannins.

Racy blackberry and wild berry flavors teeter on overripe, but the wine stays in balance, turning elegant, supple and graceful on the finish. Not in the same class as Hobbs' 2002s, yet successful nonetheless, achieving an appropriate balance.

Creme d'cassis, licorice, graphite, black cherry, blueberry and black tea aromas and flavors. Full bodied, the palate fans out elegantly over the palate. The wine is concentrated, persistent but without the weight the heady nose suggests, especially for a 2003. Holding up well, the ripeness of the vintage comes trough, but with mature elegance as opposed to youthful power. Camphor, black raspberry, charcoal, currants in layers of complexity.

When Paul Hobbs founded his eponymous winery in 1991, he set out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. He began with just three - one Chardonnay, one Pinot Noir and one Cabernet Sauvignon.

Over the years, the small family of wines has grown to over a dozen as numerous new and historic vineyards have captured Hobbs' attention since that first vintage. The current wines are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation in Hobbs' continuing adventure with wine. It is his great hope that the fruit-driven, complex wines he makes with his dedicated team will continue to appeal to many people around the globe.
