The 2016 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Folatieres has a slightly richer and more showy bouquet than Les Combettes, hints of dried honey, a touch of walnut oil, the warmth of the late summer conveyed here. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity that cuts through the honeyed fruit, the richness conspicuous on the very smooth, slightly viscous, almost toasty finish that is appealing. One to watch.

Very fragrant and rather broad and juicy for an O Leflaive wine. Hint of milky coffee and lots of pleasure. Very chiselled but with more fruit than some of his wines. Falls away very slightly on the end.

The most aromatically expressive of these wines to this point, with peach and floral notes suggesting riper fruit than the Clavoillon. Juicy and nicely delineated in the mouth, with an element of rocky minerality giving the stone fruit flavors a complementary saline quality. Finishes with excellent rising length.

Outstanding. A trace of reduction is not enough to materially mask the floral and citrus zest scents. There is good muscle to the vibrant and moderately stony medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the impressively long and complex finish that is notably firm.

  • "If the blessed slopes of the Cote d'Or are home to the ultimate expression of Chardonnay, then Anne-Claude Leflaive could be regarded as the magician, some might use the word "shaman", who can conjure wine like no other from this propitious terroir." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
