The 2016 Chardonnay One Sixteen was aged in several vessels for varying lengths of time, from five to 14 months in 26% new French oak, 25% stainless, 12% foudres, 10% concrete tanks and 2% concrete eggs. It opens with soft notes of petrichor, crushed hazelnuts, Greek yogurt and fresh apples with accents of white peaches and lime peel. The palate is light to medium-bodied with bright citrus and tree fruits with a rocky streak, tangy acidity and a long, energetic finish. This offers a nice balance of savory and mineral character and has the structure to gain amplitude in bottle. 3,700 cases produced.

Bottled in December and sourced from sites mostly in the Russian River (there’s a small amount of Sonoma Coast in here), the 2016 Chardonnay One Sixteen is the larger production cuvée of the estate and could be thought of as the flagship Chardonnay. It reveals the fresher, crisper style of all the wines from Kosta Browne today and has lively notes of green citrus, stone fruits, toasted almonds, and white flowers. Steely and vibrant today, with beautiful purity, it’s going to flesh out nicely with a year in bottle and keep for 6-7 years.

  • Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
