    The 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers stands in contrast to the suave and elegant 2017 rendition. Offering up aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark chocolate, rich soil tones and cedary new oak, the wine is medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with bright acids and an imposing chassis of rich, chewy tannin. Firm and tight-knit, this will require all the patience that readers will be accustomed to afford Gouges' Pruliers.

    The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has an impressive bouquet of black cherry, raspberry, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals in an antique glass vase. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, lovely red cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruit with great depth, more than perhaps the 2009 or 2010 towards the finish that fans out gloriously. There is a great Les Pruliers here in the making but it deserves time. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

    A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. The rich, delicious and caressing medium weight plus flavors possess a velvety mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the very firm, saline and lingering finish. This is muscular but not really rustic.

  • Founded by Henri Gouges, this domaine was subsequently developed by his two sons, Michel and Marcel. For the last few years, Pierre and Christian, the grandsons, have carried on the traditions of the estate. Pierre has a passionate interest in the care of the vines and Christian oversees winemaking. Uncompromising about quality and respectful of the typicity of the different vintages, he bottles after 18 months aging in oak-barrels, using a maximum of 20% new oak in the final blending.

    Burgundy is home to some of the greatest and most expensive wines in the world. Stretching from Auxerre in the north to Lyon in the south, the region's most famous section is the limestone-rich Côte d'Or. Vineyards in Burgundy are classified according to their locations on the hillsides. Only 2% of total production is from grand cru sites, while premier cru and village-level wines are more common. It is rare for one domaine to own an entire vineyard; rather the land has been divided down to individual rows, in some cases as a result of inheritance laws. While other varieties can be found in Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reign supreme. The best examples are capable of aging for 15 years or more, a rarity for these two varieties, making them highly valuable.
