The 2016 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is soft and quite nuanced in this vintage, with lovely stone fruit, pineapple, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes. The texture and oiliness that is such a signature of this site is very much in evidence. This is a very pretty, cool, sophisticated wine from Du Mol. Today, the Charles Heintz is not quite as expressive as some of the other Chardonnays in this range. It may very well grow into an even more compelling wine than this note suggests.

The 2016 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard sings of fresh grapefruit, Bosc pears and honeyed peaches scents with sparks of lemon curd, chalk dust, mandarin peel and lime leaves notions. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers loads of citrus fruit and floral layers with a racy acid line and satiny texture, finishing on a lingering yeasty/toasty note.

A subtle if not invisible touch of wood frames nicely complex and ripe chardonnay fruit and white flower fruit aromas that slide into beautifully complex flavors that manage to deliver fine volume and intensity with no undue heaviness and I particularly like the sappy, intense equally complex finish that is truly remarkably persistent. This is really quite a lovely effort where the only aspect holding it back from the next level is the noticeable finishing warmth. Still, worth a look as it's unusual to get long barrel aged CA chardonnay that does not come across as clumsy.

Some sweetly fragrant peaches and pear blossom lead to a subtly creamy palate that has lemon-curd flavor and a smooth, supple, balanced finish. Drink now.

The 2016 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard has picked up lovely freshness over the last year and shows good focus, if less of the oiliness that is so typical of wine from this highly regarded Sonoma Coast site. There is plenty of character and verve, although the Isobel is decidedly understated and hushed next to the other Chardonnays in this range.
