    Intense blackberry and blueberry aromas with hints of fresh mushrooms. Black truffles, too. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with polished and velvety tannins. Long and muscular finish. Energetic. December 2016 availability. Needs four to five years to soften but it's impressive now.

    The 2014 Second Flight bristles with all the energy and tension that is such a signature of the vintage. Dark flavors abound, with plenty of black cherry, mocha, espresso and graphite overtones layered throughout. The 2014 is an especially muscular, brooding Second Flight. Accordingly, it is likely to require at least a few years to come into its own. The juiciness of the Merlot gives the wine its center of fruit and overall palate feel, but the Second Flight is also quite closed down today, most likely because of its recent bottling. Tasted alongside the flagship Screaming Eagle, Second Flight seems more affected by the bottling, but that is not all that unusual for Merlot-based wines, especially in this vintage.

    Very deep purple-black, the 2014 Second Flight (composed of 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon with no Cabernet Franc) is a little closed at this youthful stage, offering glimpses of blueberry compote, blackberry pie and cassis notions with touches of garrigue, bay leaves, black truffles, rose hips and underbrush plus a hint of wood smoke. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers wonderful freshness, with very firm, very finely grained tannins and layers of vibrant black fruits, finishing on a profound minerally note. With this vintage, we can see something of a stylistic departure, offering an expression of Merlot that is bright, refreshing, elegant and perfumed, and it is perhaps more similar to Screaming Eagle in terms of style than it has ever been.   • Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards is a California wines estate producing limited amounts of varietal wine to the small quantities produced and high prices commanded, their wines are considered cult wines. The winery is located in Oakville, California north of the town of Napa in the Napa Valley.

    Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent bought the 23 hectare vineyard in 1986 which was planted to produce a mix of varieties, most of which Phillips sold to various Napa wineries. With all white varieties but for 4,000 square meters, approximately 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. Philips sought the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of her wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant and subsequently met Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became her winemaker. The 1992 vintage, through a combination of very low production numbers and highly positive reviews (wine critic Robert Parker awarded the wine 99 points), resulted in Screaming Eagle wine sold at unusually high prices.

    In 2006 the estate sold to Stanley Kroenke. In an ongoing replanting strategy, the vineyard manager David Abreu is employed to oversee the process. The vineyards tended by vineyard foreman Jorge Delgado while the current winemaker is Nick Gislason.

    The estate has gained unprecedented acclaim in such a short period of time and the wins can be found in charity auction and investment portfolios for unprecedented dollar amounts. The quality is undeniable and the production of an average 700 cases makes this incredibly rare and precious. To note, the 2005 vintage produced only 400 cases.
