  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 17

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Two rather different bottles, one rather skinny and dominated by acidity and the other plumper, riper and more forward. The note refers to the latter. Lots of ripe fruit with a black olive overlay and a very dry finish. Really quite sophisticated and tightly wound. Already promising completely even if very young.

Ridge's 2014 Chardonnay (14.3% alcohol and 100% varietal) has a light straw color, an attractive nose of delicate pineapple and citrus as well as touches of fig and wood spice in the background. Medium-bodied, with good texture and richness, this is an excellent wine to drink over the next 4-5 years.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

Shows off a wild, savory herb and underbrush character that moves in different flavor zones but comes up short on focus and lacks a core flavor theme. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,000 cases made.

The 2014 Monte Bello is going to need at least a decade to show everything it has. Deceptively medium in body and super-classic in its mid-weight structure, the 2014 offers notable brightness and intensity in an understated style, even by Ridge standards. Today, the 2014 is intensely linear, focused and vibrant. Petit Verdot is the variety that suffered most in the drought, so its presence in the blend is minimal.

Unique aromas of blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate and walnut. Full body, very powerful and tannic. Incredible depth and power. Precise and so focused. Muscular. Great structure. This needs at least six to eight years to come together.

  • Ridge Vineyards, known for its stellar reds, began when San Francisco doctor Osea Perrone bought 180 acres of land near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. The cellar, which is also the present-day production site, was built into the mountainside on three levels. After success with several Cabernet Sauvignon vintages in the 1940s, the Perrone family decided to buy the terraces back and began producing high-quality Zinfandel and Cabernet. By the '60s, Ridge was a 45-acre vineyard and produced its first Geyserville Zinfandel. Today, Ridge also has vineyards in Sonoma and Paso Robles. While Cabernet and Zinfandel make up most of Ridge's production, small amounts of Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, and Petite Sirah are also grown.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
