  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 16

Dutton Ranch, on Goldridge soils and well known in these parts, has been made by Kistler since 1979. 12,660 bottles filled, again. Greenish gold. Really quite rich for a Sonoma Coast wine. But then Dutton is really quite a long way from the coast... Big and bold. Very smooth and as though it were imbued with crystallised lilies (it has sweetness and floral notes). Just a little hot and simple on the end. But muscular with firm tannins. It should last well even if it is less pure and fine than some. A very different structure and flavour profile from most Kistler Chardonnays in its beefiness.

Exhibits a tangy mix of citrus, grapefruit and green tree fruits that are zesty and refreshing, with the acidity carrying the flavors. Drink now through 2020. 1,055 cases made.

The 2014 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch has expressive scents of ripe peaches, honeydew melon and pink grapefruit with touches of toasted almonds, croissant and acacia honey. There's a wonderfully rich, seductive and opulent quality to the palate with decadent creaminess to the texture and rich, ripe fruit, finishing long with a pleasant savory character coming through. This is a real hedonist's wine!

The 2014 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is quite powerful, yet retains its distinctly mid-weight structure and personality. Lemon confit, white flowers and mint are some of the signatures, but it is the wine's energy and drive that are most in evidence today.

  • Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
