Absolutely perfect is the incredible blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Cabernet Franc – the 2014 Proprietary Red EE. Only 220 cases were made of this wine that was aged in equal parts Taransaud and Darnajou. It has a compelling fragrance of spring flowers, blackberry and cassis, graphite, licorice and truffle. The wine has incredible length, density, full body and superb finish of close to 50+ seconds. It is a big, super-complex wine already, and should continue to offer off-the-charts drinking pleasure for another 15 or more years.

Oak plays a prominent role, imparting a smoky, cedary, charry edge to the core of dark berry, currant and licorice. Tannins are firm and grainy, with the appropriate weight. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2019 through 2031. 220 cases made.

The 2014 Red Wine EE Tench Vineyard is surprisingly seamless and open-knit for such a young wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, licorice, mocha and chocolate fill out the wine's supple, inviting frame effortlessly. Best of all, the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Russell Bevan continues to build on the greatness he achieved with his 2012s and 2013s with some of the finest 2014s in all of Northern California. Moreover, 2015 looks to be another great vintage. In addition, 2016 was shaping up spectacularly when I was in Napa in late August and early September. All of Bevan's 2014s are in bottle and are exciting, even exhilarating wines. But be forewarned, these are not for the anti-flavor folks, as they are pedal-to-the-metal, full-throttle and super-intense, but have great balance and integrity of fruit.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
