Honeyed, with fleshy melon and apricot flavors that are ripe and appealing. Notes of orange zest and white chocolate linger on the detailed finish. Drink now. 190 cases made.

The 2014 Viognier Estate checks in as a new benchmark for me on California (and United States) Viognier. Bottled in August of 2015, it offers terrific notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, tangerine and apricot, with full-bodied richness, a layered texture and a great finish. This is a big wine, no doubt, but it stays lively, graceful and elegant. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years.

Pale gold. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of lemon curd, orange peel and pungent flowers take on a smoky nuance in the glass. Sappy, expansive citrus and orchard fruit flavors gain sharpness from a zesty mineral quality and pick up honey and candied ginger notes with air. Chewy, gripping and focused on the penetrating finish, which lingers with impressive tenacity and a resonating ginger note. - Josh Raynolds

  • Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.
