Youthful mid ruby. Compact nose with plenty of depth. Gorgeous fruit palate with bags of crunchy tannins, and the whole is finely balanced. Powerful and at the same time composed. (WS)

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino shows a pretty, mid-weight appearance with garnet and amber hues. This is a tight and elegant expression that shows initial signs of aging and evolution. The primary fruit is mild and tucked in at the back. The main forces of the bouquet include licorice, dried fruit and dusty exotic spice. This Brunello is almost ready to drink now and should be consumed over a shorter drinking window.

Elegant, balanced and shows a nice mix of berry fruit, with savory underbrush and mineral elements. This is firm and fresh, with a lingering aftertaste on the salty side. Not imported into the U.S. Best from 2021 through 2033.

Plenty of spices and fresh herbs on the nose, such as dried rosemary and nutmeg, to match the underlying dried redcurrants and cranberries. Full-bodied with plenty of concentration, but still shows a very sturdy, tannin backbone and punchy acidity, to drive this through to a long finish. Drink in 2021.

Made with easy-ripening fruit from the sunny southwest quadrant of the appellation, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali is a charming and fruit-forward expression. This wine is softer and more accessible than the other two single-vineyard expressions I tasted from Val di Suga. The fruit is dark and saturated with summer cherry, plum, spice and tobacco. This wine ages in new French barrique for 24 months. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

Good full red. Musky and mineral accents complicate the aromas of raspberry, flint and violet on the enticing nose. A step up in refinement and precision from Poggio al Granchio, with a thrilling silky texture to the tactile flavors of raspberry, red cherry, crushed stone and cinnamon. Wonderfully pure, boasting very fine tannins and lingering sweetness, this is a polar opposite of the rounder, richer, riper Poggio al Granchio.

A powerful red, with dense tannins buoying the black cherry, plum, tobacco, soy and tar flavors. Ample sweet fruit midpalate offsets the structure, while the finish echoes the tar and soy notes. Best from 2023 through 2040. 830 cases made, 200 cases imported. — BS
