    The 2013 Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard from Sonoma originates in the home vineyard of Joel and Morgan Peterson, its vines planted in 1888. It is composed of volcanic, rocky soils and, like most of the vineyards for Turley, organically managed. This is a killer 2013 Zinfandel, with raspberry, black cherry, briary, berry fruit, some hints of subtle earth, pepper, spice and a nice, meaty, full-bodied mouthfeel, its terrific acidity giving it balance. The alcohol is slightly lower than some of the other big boys in the portfolio, coming in at 14.9%. Drink it over the next decade.

  • California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels.     Zinfandel is native to Croatia but today is regarded as California’s signature variety. It is made in a range of styles, the best of which are full-bodied wines with high alcohol and aromas of red and black fruit, dried berry, cardamom, anise, smoke, and black pepper. Look to producers Turley, Martinelli, and Ridge for some of the best examples of California Zin.

    Zinfandel’s full body and high alcohol require a strong dish to pair, and curries, spiced barbeque, light meats, and hard cheeses make great choices.
